The Revolutionary Chicken barrel waterer DIY kit is your answer to keeping your chicken water clean and not having to refill often. Because barrels are completely opaque, NO ALGAE will be able to grow in it. It comes with a 2 inch easy-fill plug to put on the top so you can easily pop it out and stick a hose in. It will also be able to accommodate the cord to a submersible heater (note: the optional heater sold with the waterer goes underneath and is not submersible). This comes with everything you need–all the attachments and drill bits necessary to make this–you just need to get a barrel. To find used barrels, try looking on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.
The kit comes with your choice of either four nipples, or four nipples plus two autofill cups. The cups always stay full with water, so the chickens can dip their beaks in and easily get water–no learning necessary. As the cups get dirt in them, just twist them upside down. Note that your chickens will probably not use the nipples if they can use the cups.
In freezing weather, the cups will freeze–even with a heater. The nipples will still work with a heater (down to about 10° F). If placed next to a fence or a wall, you can turn the nipples out toward the chickens in the winter, and the cups out toward the chickens the rest of the year.  The cups will work again when thawed.
The optional heater that comes with this waterer kit is a heated silicone pad that goes underneath the barrel. The heater is customized to only use 25 watts so it won’t melt the plastic of the waterer. It will keep the nipples from freezing down to about 10° F. Note that the water at the top of the barrel might be frozen, but the nipples can still work.
