The waterer includes an easy-open hinged lid, so there is no prying or wrestling with tight bucket lids when it is time to refill. For a flock of about 6–7 chickens, the waterer can often go longer than a week between refills, depending on weather and water use.

Auto-Fill Cups vs. Side-Mounted Nipples

Can chickens learn to drink from nipples? Absolutely. Remove their other waterers for a few hours so they’re ready to try something new. Then offer the nipple waterer and press the center posts to release a few drops. Once the chickens notice the water, they usually catch on quickly.

With a combination cup-and-nipple waterer, chickens may prefer the cups until they freeze. At that point, they’re more likely to try the nipples. A heater is still necessary to keep water available through the nipples, and the cups will work again once they thaw.

Cups collect dirt and dust, so clean them every few days. Swish and twist them upside down a few times to flush them with clean water.
